It's trade deadline day, and the rumors are starting back up with the Rockets and Josh Smith. What do we make of them?
Well, it's trade deadline day so you're going to start hearing a lot more rumors about the Rockets and all the perspective deals they're entertaining. The latest? Josh Smith.
Here's Woj's report on it:
The interest has been corroborated by Ken Berger so the interest definitely appears to be legitimate. However, sealing the deal would be anything but easy. Obviously, the Rockets aren't going to give up Chandler Parsons and Omer Asik for Smith, but there is still going to be a considerable price of doing business.
The Hawks received an offer of MarShon Brooks, Kris Humphries and a first round pick that they surely scoffed at, but the Rockets still have to field an offer significantly better than that. If the Hawks are asking for Chandler Parsons and Omer Asik and unwilling to move off that, the Rockets have nothing to talk about then.
At it's very core, the Rockets have to convince Atlanta that their offer is worth more than the small chance they have of bringing Howard and Smith together in Atlanta this summer. The fact is, that is difficult. But if the Rockets can maintain their core and land Smith, I think they have to go for it.
With a starting lineup of Lin, Harden, Parsons, Smith, and Asik, the Rockets could be poised to make a run in the Western Conference. They'd probably be stood up by a team like Oklahoma City, but they'd certainly make things interesting.
But what would interest Morey the most is that it would give him a shot to sell Dwight Howard on a Rockets team with both Harden and Smith. The Rockets would still have to free up some cap space if they wanted Howard, Smith, and Harden, but it would be very doable, and having Smith as a potential selling piece would really help his pitch.
In the end, it's going to be difficult to satiate Atlanta's demands, but the story is definitely one to watch as we approach the deadline. Don't believe anything Morey says, the Rockets are going to be active.
