For them, protecting the homeland is actually the most important job they could have. However, you do have to be prepared to go abroad, since a global catastrophe is not unheard of at all. The National Guard may be the right branch of the military to go to if you want to protect your country. Plus, it is only in the Guard that you only have to give one weekend a month and two weeks of your summer in time.
