President Barack Obama
President Barack Obama is winning the Catholic vote in the race to the White House by a country mile.
Obama may be taking flak from Catholic prelates but his popularity is growing with their flock.
New opinion polls commissioned by the Pew Research Center point to a 15 point lead for Obama over Mitt Romney.
Reports say the Pew poll left the 44th president with a 54-39 percent lead over Romney among American Catholics.
Analysts say Obama is running even with Romney among white Catholics but has overwhelming support with Latino Catholics.
The new poll is a major boost for Obama who led by only two points, 49-47 percent, among Catholic voters in June.
Catholic support for Obama is growing despite Romney?s decision to run Paul Ryan, a Catholic, as his vice presidential nominee.
Obama?s popularity is also growing amongst Catholics despite the move taken by America?s bishops earlier this year when they went to court against a mandate that requires church-affiliated universities and hospitals to offer contraception coverage in health care plans for their employees.
The bishops also promoted a ?Fortnight for Freedom? campaign leading up to July 4th with demonstrations against alleged threats to religious liberty.
But reports say their actions were overshadowed by ?Nuns on the Bus?, a 14-state tour by a group of Catholic nuns in protest at cuts in federal social services contained in a proposed budget of which Rep. Ryan is the prime sponsor.
Bishop John Paprocki of Springfield, Illinois, entered the Presidential debate this week when he accused Democrats of explicitly endorsing intrinsic evils like same-sex marriage and abortion rights.
The bishop claimed: ?A vote for a candidate who promotes actions or behaviors that are intrinsically evil is gravelly sinful and makes you morally complicit and places the eternal salvation of your soul in serious jeopardy.?

So many of people periodically complete a body cleansing, or perhaps a liver detox, to get us back on on the right path. This naturally is a enormous help for our complete health, but what part will it actually provide in weight loss? Here we will demonstrate a few of the reasons why a detox will be able to help you with your weight-reduction battle, and not only in the short run.
1. Make the liver more efficient. Even though your liver becomes congested, it?ll continue to work and pending serious issues is not going to let you know that anything is wrong. But the greater clogged it gets, the less efficient it becomes. So instead of breaking down and removing fat, it sends them off into storage. You know what that does for your weight.
2. Will get you thinking about a healthier diet. People who get with a cleansing program are able to slim down much more quickly than other weight-loss items because these diet programs will be right for your body. This is because detoxing diets insists that you get rid of those types of foods that have been creating the toxic increase in the first place, and then swap them with foods which aren't only fat-burning, but first-class for detoxing the body. These diets will also have you drink more water, and it's common wisdom that water will help you lose weight.
3. Give you more energy for exercising. With a detoxification program, you can expect to realize higher energy levels, relieve conditions of asthma/diabetes, and decelerate your process of aging. Such programs will be concentrating on helping you slim down, improve blood flow, increase body elimination, colon cleansing, and provide nutrients to the liver. All this can make you more eager and able to jump into weight-cutting workout plans.
4. Put you in a improved mental state. With more exercise along with improved weight management, you'll feel better about yourself, which will get the ball rolling in the direction of an improved way of life. Aside from that, you will observe that you'll have skin that is clearer, improved digestion, superior energy as well as regular bowel movements.
A good detoxification program will help a person restore their body's balance and efficiently get rid of all toxin build ups. However this doesn't mean that you are going to no longer be able to get toxins into the system. If you resume with an unhealthy lifestyle, in a period of time you will once more build up toxins in your body. Start by little by little changing your way of life now. There are many resources which you can make use of to aid you in altering your life little by little. This might take a lengthy time, but your body will thank you in your efforts to change to a healthy approach to life.

We've explained in detail on our website the importance of detoxification for good health, maintaining fitness, and living a long and active life. Since we were children, those toxins from the things we eat as well as the polluted air we breathe builds up inside our bodies to the point that our organs that are intended to eliminate the toxins, such as your liver, become overloaded. These poisons go to storage, where ideally they would be dealt with when the organs have a possible opportunity to catch up. That day of course is still waiting to come.

BALTIMORE (AP) ? Referee Gene Steratore turned on his microphone to greet the captains of the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens for the pre-game coin toss.
"Good evening, men," Steratore said. "It's good to be back."
The stadium erupted in a roar.
Yes, the real refs are back. Official harmony is restored to the NFL.
Steratore and his seven-man crew donned their familiar stripes for the first game of Week 4 after three weeks of replacement officials created moments of chaos throughout the league. The officials ran a mostly smooth and efficient game through three quarters Thursday night, with no headline-making calls as the Ravens took a 23-10 lead over the Browns.
"You know we always pride ourselves in being a face without a name," Steratore, a 10-year league veteran, told The Associated Press about an hour before kickoff. "This will be a little different, but I don't expect it to last too long. And that's the goal ? is that we can let them get through that portion of this. It's happy to be back, it's happy to be appreciated. But then as soon as the game starts, it's happy to disappear again and let the entertainers entertain."
Everyone on all sides was happy to see the familiar faces they usually love to boo, and the welcome-back love began early. About an hour before kickoff, the officials walked on the field and heard cheers from the early arrivals. A few minutes later, Steratore was shaking hands with Browns coach Pat Shurmur near midfield and getting a hug from Ravens face-of-the-franchise Ray Lewis at the 30-yard line.
Later, when the crew returned, they walked on the field they received a standing ovation and doffed their caps to the crowd. One fan held up a sign that read: "Finally! We get to yell at real refs! Welcome back!"
"The other refs just made dumb calls," said Jessie Riley, a 15-year-old fan wearing an Ed Reed jersey. "I couldn't stand them. Now we won't get robbed; everything will be fair ? hopefully."
A lockout of the league's regular officials ended late Wednesday, two days after a disputed touchdown catch on the last play of "Monday Night Football" brought debate over the use of the replacements to a fevered pitch nationwide. The Seattle Seahawks were awarded the score ? and a 14-12 win ? over the Green Bay Packers, a result that Commissioner Roger Goodell acknowledged "may have pushed the parties further along" in the talks.
"Obviously when you go through something like this it is painful for everybody," Goodell said. "Most importantly, it is painful for our fans. We are sorry to have to put our fans through that, but it is something that in the short term you sometimes have to do to make sure you get the right kind of deal for the long term and make sure you continue to grow the game."
The deal is only tentative ? it must be ratified by 51 percent of the union's 121 members in a vote scheduled for Friday and Saturday in Dallas ? but both sides nevertheless went forward with the plan to have the regulars back for Thursday's game.
So Steratore hustled to Baltimore, making the 3?-hour drive Thursday morning from his home in the Pittsburgh area. He's usually in place the day before a game, but none of his regular pregame meetings had to be changed because the Browns-Ravens game was at night.
"Very elated to be back," he said. "It feels like being back home."
Steratore, who is a basketball official in the Big East Conference among others, also was fully aware he would be jeered the first time he makes a questionable call ? just like always.
"Without a question," he said. "I've been yelled at by my own children many times, so this won't be any different."
Sure enough, the same fans that cheered the coin toss let out a full round of boos when line judge Jeff Seeman toss his yellow flag some 20 yards to whistle Baltimore safety Bernard Pollard for a personal foul in the third quarter. Replays showed it was a good call: Pollard led with his helmet to make contact with a defenseless receiver, costing the Ravens 15 yards in a drive that led to a field goal for the Browns.
Steratore's crew nearly made a misstep in the first quarter, incorrectly spotting the ball by 2 yards after a misapplication of the rules following a holding call on the Browns. But two members of the crew caught the mistake and notified the referee before the next snap. A brief huddle ensued, and the ball was moved to its correct spot.
The crew made it clear early that it wouldn't tolerate the extra pushing and shoving after the whistle that had been frequently permitted by the replacements. Offsetting personal fouls were called on Cleveland's Johnson Bademosi and Baltimore's James Ihedigbo for extracurricular roughness on a punt return.
Steratore had to make a trip to the replay monitor for the same play to review a turnover. The replays clearly showed that Cleveland's Joshua Cribbs had fumbled, so Steratore confirmed the ruling on the field. Cribbs had his helmet knocked off and was injured on the play, creating the only lengthy delay in the first three quarters.
There were 12 penalties called through three quarters, mostly the familiar calls for holding and false start. There was a rare ? and indisputable ? whistle for fair catch interference on a punt return on Cleveland, and a hands-to-the-face call on Baltimore's Mitchell Schwartz was so obvious that it drew three flags.
Steratore and his crew set up shop in the designated "Officials Locker Room" in the bowels of the stadium. He emerged about 2? hours before kickoff to talk briefly to a stadium official about the wireless on-field microphone the referee wears. He later held a regular pregame meeting with stadium crew, telling them to "make sure we run this thing as smoothly" as they had in his previous visits to Baltimore.
Steratore then walked down the tunnel and onto the field, pacing the sidelines with little fanfare because he was still wearing his coat and tie.
The lockout ended after marathon negotiations produced an eight-year agreement to end the lockout that began in June. However, for the Packers, Redskins, Lions and other teams who voiced their displeasure with calls that might have swayed games, the agreement doesn't change their records.
The commissioner said he watched Monday night's frenetic Packers-Seahawks finish at home.
"You never want to see a game end like that," he said.
The new agreement will improve officiating in the future, Goodell asserted, reducing mistakes like those made Monday and making the strains of the last three weeks worthwhile.
Goodell acknowledged "you're always worried" about the perception of the league.
"Obviously, this has gotten a lot of attention," he said. "It hasn't been positive, and it's something that you have to fight through and get to the long term. ... We always are going to have to work harder to make sure we get people's trust and confidence in us."
The dispute even made its way to the campaign trail, with President Barack Obama's spokesman, Jay Carney, calling Thursday "a great day for America."
"The president's very pleased that the two sides have come together," Carney said.

Here are some tips and tweaks that will help extend the battery life of your wireless mouse and keyboard.

There?s a little on/off switch on the bottom of your wireless mouse that you can use to manually turn off the mice when its not in use.?This may slightly extend the battery life of your mouse in case you aren?t having one of the newer mice models that automatically switch off when left idle for a long period.
The problem is how do you remember that you have to turn off the wireless mouse (and the keyboard) when you are done for the day?
One option would be that you you use the built-in Windows Task Scheduler or the Group Policy Editor to display a reminder message on the screen every time you log off or shut down the computer. This is both geeky and requires too many steps.
Then there?s a simpler option as well. You can change the default ?System Shutdown? and ?System Logoff? sounds to a voice message that reminds you to turn off the mice before you are leave the computer. Here?s a sample sound (.wav file) created with Listen.
Open the Control Panel in Windows and search for Change System Sounds. Choose the ?Exit Windows? event and browse for your .wav file to set it as the default sound for the event. Do the same for ?Windows Logoff? event and you?ll never forget to turn off your wireless mouse and keyboard again.
Speaking of battery life, here are some additional tips courtesy Logitech?that may further push the battery life of your wireless mouse.

Boats from China and Japan chased each other around a set of disputed islets, setting off a diplomatic crisis. But when Taiwan entered the fray, neither side seemed to care.

The government in Taipei said last week it wanted to be a peacemaker in a sovereignty dispute involving a set of uninhabited islands in the East China Sea. Boats from China and Japan had chased each other around the islets they both claim, setting off mass protests in China that sent Sino-Japanese relations to a new low.
Then this week, Taiwan stopped talking about peace as 12 of its coast guard vessels escorted some 50 Taiwanese fishing boats to the islets, a sort passive-aggressive reminder of its own claim to islets that are 137 miles from Taiwan. Japan controls the islands, which it calls the Senkakus, and sprayed water cannons at Taiwan?s boats to keep them away.
But instead of setting off a diplomatic crisis, no one appears to be taking Taiwan too seriously ? at least not yet.
As far as China is concerned Taiwan is still part of China even though a Nationalist Party set up a rival government in Taipei after losing the Chinese civil war to the Communists in the 1940s. Beijing believes it will capture Taiwan someday even though the two sides are now self-ruled. By that logic any new territory Taiwan locks in would eventually go to China anyway.
At the same time, Japan and Taiwan can hardly live without each other. The former World War II colonizer is today one of Taiwan?s top five sources of tourism. Common Taiwanese take fashion, food, and shopping cues from peers in Tokyo while a strong contingent of conservative Japanese lawmakers who dislike communist China embraces Taiwan as a friendly fellow democracy.
?Japan is probably the only country in the world that attaches strategic importance to Taiwan,? says Bonnie Glaser, a senior fellow with the CSIS Freeman Chair in China Studies.
But Taiwan?s leadership neither expects to conquer the tiny islets nor broker a peace deal. President Ma Ying-jeou?s government is, instead, intent on using the issue to fulfill an often failed, 4-year-old domestic pledge: expand clout among major world nations through informal ties usually described as soft power.?
China forbids its 170-plus diplomatic allies from engaging Taiwan directly. But Taiwan may hope its idea to be a regional peacemaker?will stimulate scholarly debate in the United States, putting Taipei on the map of high-level academic conferences, says Alexander Huang, strategic studies professor with Tamkang University in Taiwan. ?Ma has taken at least an initiative and a moral high ground,? Mr. Huang says.
Taiwan has also avoided bashing China with heated language (letting Japan handle that) over the disputed islets, though they make separate claims. That puts the two sides in the same boat as seen from Beijing. ?It embraces the one-China concept in Beijing?s eyes,? Mr. Huang adds.
That edge will make China happier, and Taiwan wealthier, when the two sides bargain over trade tariffs or investment rules.?
Making good on that pledge to expand clout matters now as President Ma Ying-jeou sees approval ratings of just 15 to 25 percent this year so far because of domestic issues such as rising prices and stubborn wages. Term limits would stop Mr. Ma from seeking a new term in 2016, but his Nationalist Party could inherit any approval problems he leaves behind.

If you choose to eat a sandwich, do not put too many condiments on it. Sugar is present in these condiments, and that can cause you to consume more calories than you bargained for. Use sugary condiments sparingly if you cannot go without them.
TIP! Walking is a great way to take off extra weight. It does double duty for your weight loss?it burns calories while also suppressing your appetite! You should walk at a swift pace for at least 30 minutes on most days to burn off around 250 calories per half hour stint.
Losing weight successfully might feel impossible. Lots of diets have goals that aren?t realistic because they promise results that just aren?t typical. Everyone is different, so everyone must find the weight loss strategies that work best for them. The information in this article will help you reach your weight loss goals.
Make sure to maximize your water intake during the day. By cutting down on how much you consume and drinking around a half gallon of water every day, you will begin to lose more weight. That is not the same as fat loss, but it is a jumpstart to a weight loss program and an easy way to cut off five pounds.
TIP! A quick and efficient way to lose weight is by chewing gum that is sugarless. Chewing gum may help suppress your appetite.
Speak with your family and friends about what diets they have tried. Talk to people who resemble how you would like your body to look. Ask them about their diet and fitness routine. You might get some good info that will ensure you lose the weight.
Through connecting with family or friends to lose weight, you?ll have a special workout buddy who can help you if you get off track with eating right or working out. Support can be key to your weight loss.
TIP! Do not worry about what your scale says. When you use the scale too much, you may be disappointed when you do not see a difference right away.
Stop drinking alcohol to lose weight quickly. You can have alcohol in small amounts, but in excess, it makes weight loss tougher. Additionally, most drinks contain a lot of calories and reduce your body functionality. If you need to have a drink, try a low calorie one.
Keeping perishable fruits and vegetables fresh is difficult. Try throwing them in the freezer so that you?ll have a healthy, ready-to-cook food in a pinch. Having frozen broccoli in the freezer makes it easier to throw together a healthy meal on short notice. It?s also harder to make excuses for eating a poor diet when healthy foods are so accessible.
Be sure to always drink water. In a lot of cases, when you feel hungry, you are really just misreading thirst signals.
Losing weight is easy if you start a cardiovascular routine. Often referred to as ?cardio,? this type of exercise includes running, biking, speed walking and any other activity that increases your heart rate. Fat burns the most during a rising and high heart rate. Try to get in at least 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise a minimum of 3 to 4 days a week.
Plan meals ahead for a healthier diet. Meals you have previously prepared will be just as quick as a drive thru, and with a ton of less fat and calories. Always follow the meal plans that you make. One of the most common mistakes people make is substituting fast food in favor of healthy alternatives. You can burn calories by having the food cooked.
TIP! Once you have lost a good amount of weight, get rid of your old clothes by donating them to charity or throwing them away. This activity gives you concrete evidence of your progress and makes you more confident.
You have to exercise at least three times a week for 1/2 hour in order to lose weight. Set yourself a schedule that works for you. If working out in the morning before work is your best option, do that. If working out in the evening after work is best, workout then. Stick to your schedule. If you stay consistent with your diet and exercise plan, then you will lose weight.
If you do not want to get rid of butter, use whipped butter instead. Many people don?t want to replace or reduce their usage of butter. Some people simply enjoy how real butter tastes. However, there is a healthier option that does not cut back on flavor. Just change over to eating whipped butter. Whipped butter contains half the calories of normal butter.
TIP! Don?t give up on your weight loss goals. At times, you may feel like you are never going to achieve your goals.
If you?ve lived as an individual who has been overweight for a long time, you shouldn?t view weight loss as simply a single stage of your life. Consider yourself an expert on losing weight and utilize everything you?ve learned to maintain your weight loss.
Take some time during your day to focus on contracting and relaxing the muscles in your abdomen and back. If you notice your posture reverting back to normal, just fix it again. Stronger core muscles will improve your posture and make exercising easier.
TIP! A good tip for those who are beginning a weight loss program is to take one step at a time. Begin by sacrificing one habit that is unhealthy and then start eating better over time.
If you want to lose weight, go on a hike. This will give you a chance to exercise your legs and burn off excess calories while enjoying the sights. The amount of calories you burn depends on the type of hiking you are doing. Hiking up hills carrying weight will burn more calories than a cross-country hike.
Drinking more coffee can contribute to weight loss. Coffee is a common drink, but many people don?t realize it is helpful for workouts. It can give you some extra energy and boost the metabolism.
TIP! Before you start losing weight, take a picture to document where you are now. These pictures can help you keep motivated to attain your weight loss goals.
Reduce the amount of stress in your life. It becomes tempting to eat food that is not healthy when you are under a lot of stress If it much simpler to focus on long term weight loss goals and stay on the right road when you live a happy, stress-free life.
Don?t keep your weight loss attempt a secret. These people are a great source of encouragement and help if they are aware of what you are doing. They will also not tempt you with foods and certain drinks that they would otherwise, if they didn?t know.
TIP! Make sure you maintain a positive attitude while losing weight. Thinking positively about eating a healthy diet and enjoying your workouts will eliminate any feelings of dread you may have.
If you want to lose weight, eat leftovers. When you?re making dinner, cook extra for the following day?s lunch. For example, if you are roasting a chicken for dinner, use a small amount to make chicken salad for lunch. This also is very practical and saves you time and money.
Walk up and down the stairs when you are aiming to lose weight. You may think that this is no big deal, but all extra calories that you burn will eventually add up to weight loss.
TIP! Get intimate with your partner. Satisfying your sexual appetite can curb your hunger and can burn off calories, as well.
Many people make dinner the largest meal of the day; a better option is to focus on eating a large lunch and a more modest supper. If you eat sandwiches for lunch, try eating it during supper instead. Your peak calorie-burning period is during the day when you are active, so it makes sense for your peak eating time to coincide with this.
While you are losing weight, you might want to limit how much you spend on clothes by buying them at thrift or discount stores. This makes sense because if you?re losing weight you don?t want to have to keep buying expensive clothes each time you drop down a size.
TIP! Try to avoid emotional eating, as this is one of the most common ways to gain unwanted pounds. If you are really sad, try working out in order to cheer up yourself.
Learn what food labels really means. Just because a food item is fat-free, it can still be unhealthy. You may find that it contains a greater amount of sugar and calories, and is really a food you ought to avoid. Be sure to read all of the label to understand what you are eating.
Keep the color blue in your life. Many people do not realize that blue has the power to stave off cravings. Outfit your dining table with a blue tablecloth and accessories. Warm or hot colors, like orange, yellow or red, can prompt overeating. Visual cues in your environment may affect your appetite without you even realizing it. Try this as an interesting experiment when choosing new food plates or clothing to wear out to dinner.
Losing weight is, at its core, about mind over matter. You must talk yourself into thinking that it is very achievable and empower yourself. When you acquire the motivation to lose weight, you have completed the first step towards success.
Replace all of your normal drinks with pure filtered water. Soda, and even juice, are very high in sugars and calories. Water has zero net calories and is basically free. It also helps you to feel refreshed and full.
When losing weight, an excellent suggestion is to get yourself a pedometer. A pedometer keeps an accurate count of the number of steps you take per day. This will help make sure that you are walking the proper amount. Your goal should be to walk 10,000 steps or more. If you find yourself falling short of that amount, find ways to incorporate more walking into your daily routine.
Pound meat with a mallet prior to storing it for later use. Then divide it into small portions to freeze, so you have single-serving portions ready when you need them. You will also be able to cook more flavorful and more tender meats without having to depend on high-calorie additives if you pound the meat first.
Making fruits and vegetables more rewarding to eat will keep you eating more of them, so dress them up with healthy dips and sauces! You can use unprocessed apple sauce to dip other sweet fruits in. Make healthy garnishes for your uncooked vegetables, and enjoy a delicious, nutritious snack.
Replace your sweets with fresh fruit. If you have a habit of eating chocolate bars, candy and bags of sweetened chips between meals, replace these snacks with your favorite fruits and not only will you start to lose weight.
It was mentioned prior that weight loss is not easy. This is often because you have set goals that are not realistic and a lot of people might feel they have failed. If you use the ideas contained in this piece, it is possible to create a healthy, vigorous lifestyle that can facilitate the weight loss you desire.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Mitt Romney is set to speak by telephone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (neh-ten-YAH'-hoo) on Friday.
The Republican presidential nominee's campaign confirms the scheduled conversation. It would come the same day that President Barack Obama also is expected to speak with Netanyahu phone.
The economy has dominated the presidential contest so far, but both candidates have focused more on foreign policy in recent weeks.
Romney has been critical of Obama's relationship with Israel's leadership.
Netanyahu told the United Nations on Thursday that tougher action is needed to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. The prime minister argues that an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities may be the only answer.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? In one TV ad, a husband and wife talk fondly of a lesbian couple who moved into their neighborhood. In another, a married couple speaks of wanting fair treatment for their lesbian daughter. A third features a pastor talking supportively about gay unions.
Each of these ads ran recently in states with gay marriage issues on the November ballot. What?s missing? Gay people speaking for themselves.
Four states are voting on gay marriage this fall, and gay rights groups are pouring tens of millions of dollars into key TV markets in hopes of breaking a 32-state losing streak on the issue. But even as gay people and same-sex relationships gain acceptance through pop culture staples such as ?Modern Family? and ?Glee,? the idea is still seen as dicey by media strategists involved in the ballot campaigns, resulting in ads that usually involve only straight people talking about the issue.
The decision to keep gays in the background has been widely noticed in the gay community and debated on gay-oriented blogs, with some activists complaining that the move contradicts the central message of the gay rights movement for a number of years.
?If we don?t show ourselves, people aren?t going to get comfortable with who we are,? said Wayne Besen, director of Vermont-based gay rights group ?Truth Wins Out,? one of many that presses gays to live openly with pride in who they are.
But others counsel deference for the complexities of public messaging, pointing out that the ads are designed to speak to the fears and values of the heterosexual majority, whose vote will decide the issue.
?The moderate tough guys we need to flip to win a couple of these races are still the ones who say that gays are gross,? said Andy Szekeres, a Denver-based fundraising consultant who has worked on several state campaigns and had access to focus group data. ?Pushing people to an uncomfortable place, it?s something you can?t do in a TV ad,? said Szekeres, who is gay.
The definition of marriage is on the ballot this fall in Maine, Maryland, Minnesota and Washington. Beyond those, according to the Human Rights Campaign, 37 states prohibit gay marriage while six and the District of Columbia permit it. Gay activists and their allies are hoping that any wins in November would throw new momentum their way at a time when polls nationwide have shown growing acceptance for gay marriage.
Six of the seven ads broadcast in the contested states this year have featured only straight people talking about the issue. One ad, which played only in Maine, included a firefighter who talked of being accepted by his colleagues. The ads, along with most that ran in the 2008 campaign in California and in other past statewide races, rely on heterosexual family members and friends of gays talking about how the inability to marry has deprived their loved ones of rights and opportunities they should have.
Gay marriage opponents, who also have well-funded campaigns in the four states, plan to begin airing ads soon. In recent interviews, an organizer said the key message is aimed at parents, suggesting legal recognition could result in their kids being told in school and in society that it?s OK to be gay.
Gay activists who have worked on the marketing campaigns say that in this battle for public opinion, it?s better for gays to stay in the background.
?The simple truth is that we are trying to win over the people that are not yet with us,? said Matt McTighe, campaign manager of Mainers United for Marriage, which is pushing the ballot measure to legalize gay marriage in that state. ?I?m a gay man, and the general rule of thumb for me is that an ad that meets my emotional needs is not necessarily the thing that?s going to change a typical voter?s mind about gay or lesbian people.?
A May 2011 poll by the Pew Research Center found growing acceptance of gay people on a number of fronts, but still plenty of doubts. Fifty-eight percent of poll respondents said gays should be accepted in society compared to 33 percent who said they shouldn?t. More people thought gays raising children was bad for society rather than good, though the largest number of respondents were neutral on the question. The same poll found 45 percent support for gay marriage rights, up from 35 percent just two years earlier.
The first ad broadcast by Minnesotans United for All Families, which is trying to defeat the state?s proposed constitutional ban on gay marriage, is aimed at parents. It features Kim and John Canny ? two straight Catholics, Republicans and parents of three daughters from a Minneapolis suburb who discuss coming around to support gay marriage after a lesbian couple with an adopted son moved into their neighborhood.
The lesbian couple is briefly glimpsed in the ad, but not heard from.
Alexander Zachary, a gay man from Minneapolis, complained that the ads he?s seen reflect an ?antiquated mindset.?
?This isn?t San Francisco in 1973, where all the gay people live in one neighborhood and all the straight people live everywhere else,? he said. ?We?re not this hidden culture anymore, so why act like it??
Richard Carlbom, manager of the Minnesota campaign, declined to say if future Minnesota United ads would feature gay people. Upcoming ads will ?articulate why gay people want to get married,? he said.
Many straight people ?are on a journey on this issue, and the most effective way to encourage them is to show them other people who have taken the same journey,? and come to accept gay marriage, Carlbom said.
Bil Browning, a Washington, D.C., gay activist and writer, recently called a straights-only ad that ran in Washington state ?a heterosexual snoozefest? on his blog. He pointed out that gay activists seem to be using the strategy even though they?ve yet to win a campaign. In the 32 states where the issue has been on a statewide ballot, gay marriage advocates have lost every time.
?Maybe it?s time to reevaluate these strategies and include our families, actual LGBT people,? Browning said. ?We?re never going to win if we can?t show our faces. It looks like we have something to hide, and we don?t.?

Clopton Capital, a commercial real estate finance firm that offers commercial mortgages and loans for income producing properties nationwide, announces the opportunity for commercial real estate owners and operators to lock in historically low interest rates for non-recourse loans.
Over the past couple weeks, treasury rates have dipped to extremely low levels that are offering borrowers the opportunity to refinance and acquire commercial real estate at extremely low rates for non recourse loans. Non recourse loans are based off of treasury rates, so the lower the treasury rates go, the lower the rates go as long as the spread charged to borrowers doesnt change. Eligible property types would include multifamily, office, retail centers, hospitality, and industrial properties. We are looking to provide financing for a diverse range of property types. Loan amounts range from $ 1 million up to as high as $ 50 million and we are seeing rates dip into the low 4%s for strong properties, says Jake Clopton, founder. Last we heard from Mophie, it revealed its upcoming Juice Pack case for Samsung's Galaxy S III. While there's still no further info for that model, the company recently took to its Facebook and Twitter accounts to announce it's new $40 Juice Pack Reserve Micro. The palmable battery pack is nearly identical to the 30-pin friendly Juice Pack Reserve, but, as the Micro in its name implies, this one charges Micro-USB devices. The unit features a key chain loop and stores a total load of 1,000mAh, which gets re-filled via its secondary USB 2.0 plug. There's more info at the source links below -- here's to hoping for a Lightning variant soon.

That?s right. I said easy lasagna-stuffed chicken! Bam.
And thanks to an amazing burger basket by Mr. BBQ I used my way (I?m such a rebel), I made mine with no fuss and no muss?right on the grill! (Of course, you don?t need a grill to make this delicious recipe. Keep reading for more.)
Tip: You can replace a boneless skinless chicken breast for the chicken.
The?Mr. BBQ Ultimate Burger Basket?is the most amazing, quality burger basket I?ve ever used (and I?ve used a few. I?ve been around that block).
Pressing meat perfectly in place (see images below), the basket secures easily to ensure even pressure across four patties, chicken breasts, or anything else you might want to press flat during grilling.
You could even grill vegetables, fish or hamburgers in here and know they?ll still be there when you come back (I sob when I lose food between the grill grates).
I also love that the solid-quality wooden handle stays cool to the touch for safe grilling.
I was so jazzed about this product, I had to try stuffing some chicken, which begged the question, Would it hold the fillings in the chicken without those wretched toothpicks? The answer is yes!
Below is a close up of how nicely the chicken is held in place. I didn?t have the mess or have to deal with broken toothpicks because this basket holds everything perfectly.
For this delicious casserole-in-a-chicken breast, I decided to use the pizza sauce only as an afterthought in this dish since tomato/acids have never really served me well in the chicken cooking process.?I find that creamy, decadent dairy-based beauties like ricotta and mozzarella net the best fillings. ?And what?s more, mixing all the fillings in a bowl makes it easy to prepare.
Tip: Brining chicken before cooking helps keep moisture inside.
This recipe is easy to make ahead and reheated for quick lunches or dinners, and for only 334 calories and 2.7 net carbs, you can indulge a?little?knowing that this filling, cheesy dish will please even the pickier palates around the dinner table.
Tip: You can use frozen spinach in place of fresh if you decrease the amount by about half and drain thoroughly.
And, by the way, even though I had to try out this basket for chicken, I guess you could use Mr. BBQ?s Deluxe Burger Basket for making hamburgers, too. I guess.
3 large, raw boneless chicken breasts
1 cup ricotta cheese
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
12 slices pepperoni (optional)
1/2 cup fresh spinach, chopped
1/4 tsp Mrs. Dash Garlic Italian?Seasoning?Blend
3 slices salami, chopped (optional)
2 Tbsp olive oil
1-1/2 Tbsp lemon juice
1 tsp pepper
1/4 cup no-sugar added pizza sauce
1/4 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
Rinse the chicken. Pat dry. Remove membranes from the chicken. Carefully cut a slit in the top of the chicken to form a pocket the length of the chicken breast.
Brine chicken in 1 tsp pepper, 2 Tbsp olive oil and 1-1/2 Tbsp lemon juice for an hour. Drain off brine.
If using oven, preheat to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. If using a grill, begin heating.
Toss cheeses, pepperoni, seasoning, salami, spinach and onion together in a medium mixing bowl. Stuff chicken.
Grill chicken for 12 minutes per side, or bake uncovered in a 325 degree Fahrenheit oven for 45 minutes (or until chicken is no longer pink).
To plate: top hot chicken with a schmear of pizza sauce and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.
Makes 3 large chicken breasts, or 6 servings.

A plate of grilled chicken, moist and perfect. Hey, it doesn?t matter that we?ll have snow next month; we grill all year-long in Colorado. Just look for those pink moon boots and let?s do it.

It is one of those two-edged swords. Being the official game of a popular sports event does get the developer a fair bit of publicity, but on the flip side, it also heightens public expectations as it expects something that matches the aura and excitement of the "real" thing.
It is on this altar of public expectation that many official event titles have stumbled in the past, although some titles, like that for the recently concluded London Olympic Games, are a welcome exception. So you would not have blamed us for approaching the rather elaborately named T20 ICC Cricket WorldCup 2012, the official game for the T20 World Cup that is currently going on in Sri Lanka, with a bit of trepidation.
At 12.7 MB, the game is a relatively light download for an action oriented game. One can go for the free, lite version (which offers only quick matches and challenges) or spend about Rs. 53 and get all the trimmings in the full one. Looking for a deeper experience, we opted for the full version to play on our Sony Xperia Ion. Like all official games, this one too comes with the official team and groupings set out, just as in the tournament.
The look of the game is right out of the mobile cricket titles we used to see a few years ago. Hardly jaw-dropping.
On first glance, the game looks very much like a blast from the past, with relatively small players, vivid green outfields and a playing square - very reminiscent of older mobile cricket titles. And that unfortunately, is not the only semblance the game has to older cricket titles. The gameplay too seems right out of an older edition of EA Cricket, with onscreen controls for controlling which stroke to play or which delivery to bowl. It can get a tad taxing in the bowling department, where you need to work out speed, where the ball will bounce, the kind of swing you want, and then top it off by timing your release properly ? in faith, it is easier in real cricket. There is a relatively auto mode in batting where all you need to do is tap anywhere on the screen at the right time and leave the rest to the batsman, but that gets way too simple - a swipe to the right or to the left would have been much more fun, a la what one does in the supremely addictive Stick Cricket. Casual pick up and play, this game ain?t.
The cheerleaders go through their routine whenever you hit a big shot or take a wicket. And it can get a tiresome.
On the flip side, there is no doubt that for the button-pushing crowd, the game offers plenty. In the best official game tradition, it has got the entire T20 World Cup mapped out, complete with groups. You can play matches of different durations, or if just in the mood for a short snappy burst of cricket, can take up a challenge, in which you either have to score a certain number of runs in a limited period of time or stop them from being scored. We must confess however that we were a bit surprised to see no official player names in the app - I mean, this is an official app, so we should get Gambhir, Sehwag and Kohli rather than Gumbi, Sahwa and Kuhli, right? And yes, if you are the micro-managing type, getting the stroke and its timing right can be pretty satisfying as can be getting the ball in the right place while bowling. Those of you looking to marshall the fielding after every delivery will be disappointed, though - batting and bowling is what ye do in this game, with fielding in autopilot. Getting runs and wickets is definitely not easy - something we approve of - and you will need to really be on the ball to get the scoreboard ticking in your favour.
Yes, it is the official mobile game, but the players still come with "improvised" names. That's the Windies line up for you.
The graphics of the game are best described as mediocre - we would not have minded them a few years ago but in the era of EA Sports? graphic rich treats, the game looks dated. Square Enix too followed the Sprites-as-Players path in its Big Cup Cricket, but came up with a presentation that was far more polished. Here the batsmen seem a bit too keen on playing reverse sweeps and helicopter shots and most bowler run ups and actions look the same. And call us picky, but we did not like the song and dance routine served up by the cheerleaders after every big shot or wicket. The gameplay is a tad complex as we pointed out but is comprehensive enough for those who like fussing around with most aspects of the game. There is some fun to be had here if you are willing to invest time in it.
Once the stroke is played, the game switches to sprite-mode. You do get to see the full field of play, though.
All of which makes the official game of the T20 World Cup a VERY mixed bag indeed. We really wish the presentation and design had been better, and gameplay a tad more intuitive. And it would not have hurt to have real player names in an official title. But in spite of all our grumbling, we found ourselves returning to the game again and again, trying to master the perfect reverse sweep or helicopter shot (no, you do not get an option to actually play those shots, but choose the right direction and timing and your batsman will oblige), or send down a toe-crushing yorker.
Yes, you do have to do all that to deliver a single delivery. It is a lot simpler in real life, we think. Anyone for swipe-oriented play, please?
No, it is not the best or most addictive cricket game we have played on our handsets. Big Cup Cricket and Stick Cricket continue to occupy those two slots, but if you are the types that really likes to plan their game of cricket, then you might just consider downloading T20 ICC World Cup SL 2012 on to your Android device.
And yes, we are still waiting for the first REALLY great game of cricket to arrive on the mobile platform. Give us something to rival FIFA and Virtua Tennis, folks. The religion of India (whose God is Sachin) surely merits it.

I have a special treat for Go Gingham readers today ? a giveaway for a newly released book by author Susan (?Suz?) Sachs Lipman. The book is ?Fed Up with Frenzy,? and will surely be dogged-eared and marked-up by parents everywhere who are looking for ways to slow down and reconnect with their families.
Suz is a parenting and family expert whose blog is Slow Family Online and she?s also the Social Media Director for the international Children & Nature Network.
Suz and I have met virtually through our mutual friend, Amy Suardi. Amy writes the blog Frugal Mama, where Suz and I are both contributors. While Suz and I haven?t met in person (yet!), she and I are kindred spirits.
We share a love of slowing down, making family time a priority, and doing simple activities together.
This book is an excellent resource for families who want to break out of the technological grind and spend quality time together doing activities that are enjoyable and don?t cost a lot of money.
The book is filled with ideas for spending time in nature, in the kitchen, and the garden, together as a family. There?s also a section on celebrating simply which is good to remind myself of heading into the upcoming holiday season ? and birthday season at our house!
There are directions for playing games and activities you probably played as a child but may have forgotten. You?ll find card games, travel games, and outdoor games, that will keep your family having fun whether you?re at home or on the go.
As a parent of two teenagers, I?ll also add that the introduction is particularly heartwarming. It?s written by Suz?s daughter, Anna, who is 16-years-old.
At the back of the book, you?ll find a list of resources in both print and web formats, to inspire you further.
Want your own copy? I have a brand new copy to give away and it?s not all dog-eared and marked-up like my copy is.
Leave a comment on this post below by answering one of the three questions:
