Dr. Drew Pinsky said he will not continue doing "Celebrity Rehab."

Dr. Drew Pinsky has confirmed that he has officially checked out of "Celebrity Rehab."

The physician and reality TV star recently confirmed to the Zach Sang & the Gang radio program that there will be no more seasons of "Celebrity Rehab," mainly because he's tired of getting blamed when a celebrity he's treated ends up dying from their drug addiction.

"I don't have plans to do that again, " Pinsky said. "I'm tired of taking all the heat. It's just ridiculous."

Pinsky, who starred in and co-produced five seasons of "Celebrity Rehab," said that doing the show has become too stressful for him, due to the fact that everyone is quick to point fingers at him when one of his celebrity patients relapses.

"It's very stressful and very intense for me, " Pinsky said. "To have people questioning my motives and taking aim at me because people get sick and die because they have a life-threatening disease, and I take the blame? Rodney King has a heart attack and I take blame for that?"

Pinsky said that while many viewers think that much of what is shown on "Celebrity Rehab" is faked for the cameras, the show was very real.

"These are really sick people, that's why they die," Pinsky said. "These are people with life-threatening addiction. Bob [Forrest] and Shelly [Sprague] and I ran a program for 20 years and [for 'Celebrity Rehab'] we do what we always do and just let them run the cameras."

To date, five of Pinsky's "Celebrity Rehab" patients have died, most recently country singer Mindy McCready, who took her own life in February. Still, Pinsky credits the show for helping a lot of celebrities finally get clean.

"It's sad that we're not doing more shows because people did get help," he said. "A lot of people are sober because of 'Celebrity Rehab' who wouldn't have been sober without it."

Pinsky added that he credits actor Tom Sizemore as the show's biggest success story. The actor, who was featured on the show's third season, had been trying unsuccessfully to get clean for years before coming on the show.

"We worked with him 10 years before [he came on the show]," Pinsky said. "Bob and I worked with him a lot and couldn't get him sober. And he got sober on 'Celebrity Rehab.' That's awesome."

Pinsky has practiced addiction medicine for 20 years, and said he continues to work with patients every week, in addition to hosting the nightly "Loveline" radio program, as well as his own talk show, "Dr. Drew on Call" on the HLN channel.

Saturn's youthful appearance explained

Wednesday, May 1, 2013

As planets age they become darker and cooler. Saturn however is much brighter than expected for a planet of its age - a question that has puzzled scientists since the late sixties. New research published in the journal Nature Geoscience has revealed how Saturn keeps itself looking young and hot.

Researchers from the University of Exeter and the Ecole Normale Sup?rieure de Lyon found that layers of gas, generated by physical instability deep within the giant planet, prevent heat from escaping and have resulted in Saturn failing to cool down at the expected rate.

Professor Gilles Chabrier from Physics & Astronomy at the University of Exeter said: "Scientists have been wondering for years if Saturn was using an additional source of energy to look so bright but instead our calculations show that Saturn appears young because it can't cool down. Instead of heat being transported throughout the planet by large scale (convective) motions, as previously thought, it must be partly transferred by diffusion across different layers of gas inside Saturn. These separate layers effectively insulate the planet and prevent heat from radiating out efficiently. This keeps Saturn warm and bright."

Characterised by its distinctive rings, Saturn is one of the largest planets in our Solar System, second only in size to massive Jupiter. It is primarily made of hydrogen and helium and its excessive brightness has previously been attributed to helium rains, the result of helium failing to mix with Saturn's hydrogen rich atmosphere.

Layered convection, like that recently discovered in Saturn, has been observed in the Earth's oceans where warm, salty water lies beneath cool and less salty water. The denser, salty water prevents vertical currents forming between the different layers and so heat cannot be transported efficiently upwards.

These findings suggest that the interior structure, composition and thermal evolution of giant planets in our Solar System, and beyond, may be much more complex than previously thought.

2013 Zero FX: The Hooligan-Approved Electric Motorcycle

Zero FX

?

Range, range, range-- that's all EV buyers think about. And if you've ever been stranded because a vehicle ran out of juice, be it electric, fossil, or otherwise, you probably understand the engineering obsession with low rolling resistance tires, optimized aerodynamics, and?ultimate battery capacity.

?

Zero Motorcycles has expanded the practical capabilities of their bikes for 2013, and the Scotts Valley, California-based company's flagship S model now claims 137 miles of city range, making it the longest legged EV motorcycle on the market.?

?

During a recent test of the $15,995 DS ZF11.4 model, I flogged the thing on the highway, intermittently peaking at near triple-digit speeds, and extracted about 33 miles from a half charge, which is consistent with (if not, better than) their claims of 76 miles of range at a constant 55 mph. But the real treat came when I switched bikes and climbed aboard Zero's $11,990 FX model (seen above), a nasty little armaggedon-ready steed with aggro bodywork and a claimed combined range of only 43 miles.

?

Why the modest mileage? The FX is the black sheep of the Zero lineup, packing a 70 ft-lb, 44 hp wallop in a package that weighs a feathery 275 pounds. Though my test ride was brief, it was far from forgettable: thanks to its rip-snorting power-to-weight ratio, the FX spent most of its time on one wheel, lunging ahead with the eager thrust of a short-geared flat track racer. Put simply, the FX is everything you'd never expect from an EV-- and for that reason alone, I'm relieved such a frivolous, genre busting bike exists.

?

You may be craving more information about the perfectly sensible, range-focused DS model-- and you certainly may find it elsewhere on PM.com. But trust me when I say this: the FX is the one you'll want to cozy up with on a nice, bendy (and preferably short) road.

Jose Mourinho seems headed back to Chelsea

LONDON (AP) ? Real Madrid's Champions League campaign had just ended in defeat when Jose Mourinho spotted an opportunity to send a message.

Even though Madrid can still end a mediocre season ? mediocre by its high standards, anyway ? with the Copa del Rey title, Mourinho is laying the groundwork for a divorce, dropping heavy hints about a return to the English Premier League and Chelsea, the team he managed from June 2004 to September 2007.

"I know in England I am loved," he said during a news conference in Madrid after Tuesday night's elimination. "I'm loved by the fans. I'm loved by the media that treats me in a fair way, criticizing me when they have (to), but giving me credit when I deserve it. I know I'm loved by some clubs, especially one. And in Spain the situation is a bit different because some people hate me. And many of you are in this room."

Fans in west London were stunned when Mourinho's relationship with Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich broke down in 2007 after three-plus seasons that included league titles in 2005 and 2006 ? the first for the club since 1955 ? and the 2007 FA Cup.

Each of his successors ? Avram Grant, Luiz Felipe Scolari, Guus Hiddink, Carlo Ancelotti, Andre Villas-Boas, Roberto Di Matteo and Rafa Benitez ? has been judged against Mourinho's achievements and allure.

Few, if any, have succeeded in matching his success and charisma, particularly not Benitez.

Installed as interim manager in November despite fan opposition that turned his early matches into a cauldron of hatred, Benitez's reign has underlined the need for a unifying figure to serve as the permanent manager. Benitez already has said he will be leaving when the season ends next month.

"One day, naturally, I have to be back," Mourinho said last month in London, where he kept a home. "Chelsea is in my heart."

Chelsea players are bracing for the return of the colorful leader.

"Everyone who loves Chelsea hopes Mourinho will return," Chelsea defender Bransilav Ivanovic was quoted as telling Serbian newspaper Vecernje Novosti.

Chelsea hasn't been close to winning the Premier League since Ancelotti delivered the title in 2010, and Chelsea isn't even assured of a Champions League berth for next season.

"With (Mourinho) we can be stronger as a club," Ivanovic said in the Serbian interview last week. "It would add another dimension to Chelsea, and it would be sure to help us become one of the main contenders for the title."

Mourinho has retained his swagger in recent years while appearing to tone down some the bravado, engaging in fewer conflicts with rivals and referees.

It's unlikely soccer would witness a repeat of the frenzied dash down the touchline by Mourinho at Old Trafford following a second-round win in 2004 en route to the Champions League title with Porto. When Mourinho's Madrid won at United in March, he even quietly headed toward the dressing room before the final whistle blew and then praised the losers.

Back at Madrid, some are trying to play down the impact of Mourinho's potential departure.

"It doesn't matter to me. What matters to me is Real Madrid and myself," Cristiano Ronaldo said. "Decisions about players and coaches do not matter to me. If Real Madrid is happy with him, why not (keep Mourinho)?

"To me, he is a great coach. But he is the person who knows his own future, whether he and his family are comfortable. These are decisions we have to respect and that's all."

TEN: Gauchos matched up with Pepperdine in NCAA tourney

The UC Santa Barbara men?s tennis team, which on Sunday became the first No. 5 seed to win the Big West Conference Tournament, will travel to Malibu on Friday, May 10 to play 11th-seeded Pepperdine in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament, it was announced Tuesday.

VIEW NCAA TOURNAMENT BRACKET

UCSB head coach Marty Davis was pretty sure that his Gauchos would go to one of three sites for the first round: Pepperdine, USC or UCLA.

?This is the best draw,? Davis said. ?This is the draw we were hoping for, not because it is an easy draw, but because the other options were the No. 1 seed (UCLA) or a team that has won the last four championships (No. 4 seeded USC). We haven?t seen Pepperdine in a couple of years, but I?m encouraged by the fact that they were pushed by BYU, a team we beat last year, so this is best case scenario.?

The Gauchos? march to the Big West title last weekend at Indian Wells, included three upsets in four days. In the opener, they defeated fourth-seeded Hawaii by a score of 4-2. In the second round, UCSB knocked out the top-seeded team, UC Irvine, 4-1, and in Sunday?s championship match handed third-seeded Pacific a 4-2 defeat. Each of the three teams that the Gauchos defeated in the league tournament had beaten them in the preceding two weeks.

Santa Barbara, which has won eight Big West Conference crowns, will be appearing in its 10th NCAA Tournament and first since 2009. It will be the seventh time that a Davis-led Gaucho team will appear in the postseason.

UCSB will enter NCAA play with an overall record of 12-13. Pepperdine is 24-5.

The winner of the match between the Gauchos and Waves will play a second round match against the winner of LSU-Stanford on Saturday, May 11.

Vyjack under extra scrutiny at Kentucky Derby

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) ? The small camera attached to the helmet of Rudy Rodriguez belongs to a video outlet looking to capture his viewpoint from atop Kentucky Derby contender Vyjack.

The four cameras positioned in Vyjack's stall at Churchill Downs are there to keep an extra watch on the gelding trained by Rodriguez. He was forced to accept the surveillance as a condition ordered by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission in exchange for getting a trainer's license to run Vyjack in Saturday's big race.

"Being in the Derby is an amazing accomplishment for me," said Rodriguez, who turns 41 on Wednesday, when 24-hour security for all 20 Derby horses was set to begin.

The extra scrutiny for Vyjack was the result of a string of disciplinary issues involving Rodriguez during his career as a New York-based trainer, jockey and exercise rider. Kentucky racing officials ordered him to appear at the hearing two weeks ago.

"I don't think it was right, but you got to respect what the rulings are," he said.

Last month, a filly trained by Rodriguez tested positive at New York's Aqueduct for a high level of Banamine, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that is legal for horses but must be below an allowable limit on race day. It was the third time in the last year that one of his horses tested positive for excessive levels of the drug.

Rodriguez recently served a 20-day suspension for two earlier overages of Banamine. The third overage ? considerably higher than the others ? is being investigated and could result in further penalties.

"We're lucky that Kentucky gave me the opportunity to be here," he said.

Rodriguez went out on his own as a trainer three years ago after working for father-son trainers Richard Dutrow Sr. and Rick Jr., and the late Hall of Famer Bobby Frankel.

Kentucky officials were interested in Rodriguez's tenure as an employee of the younger Dutrow, who is currently serving a 10-year suspension from New York racing officials for multiple rules violations. Some of Dutrow's clients moved their horses to Rodriguez.

"I don't let nobody ruin this moment for me. I got nothing to hide," Rodriguez said. "We're trying to play everything by the rules."

He's got the support of Vyjack's owner David Wilkenfeld, who named the gelding using a combination of his parents' names Vivian and Jack.

Also in Rodriguez's corner is Eclipse Award-winning trainer Dale Romans. They first met in 2008 when Rodriguez exercised horses for the trainer in Dubai. Romans served as a character witness for Rodriguez at the Kentucky hearing.

"He's a very good man," he said. "I thank him a lot for supporting me."

Rodriguez is about as hands-on as many trainers get, whether it's riding Vyjack during his morning workouts, staying aboard for his cooling out trips around the barn or helping bathe the gelding afterward. He holds the reins in his right hand while reaching around with his left to massage Vyjack's rump as they circle the stalls in the barn.

"I love to be around horses," he said, refusing to let the extra scrutiny cloud his upbeat disposition.

"I'm in the place where every trainer in the world wants to be. How can you not be happy?"

Rodriguez calls Vyjack the best horse of his 80-head stable. Although he's never saddled a Derby horse before, he was in the background at major races working for the Dutrows and Frankel.

"Rudy is kind of a laidback guy," said Garrett Gomez, who will ride Vyjack. "There are some loose vibes going on."

Vyjack is 4 of 5 in his brief career, with his only loss coming to undefeated Verrazano in the Wood Memorial. Vyjack finished third that day, and will take on his rival again Saturday in the Derby.

"I'm glad we got the one loss out of the way," Wilkenfeld said. "We're here to win the big one."
