Tornado warnings for Newell county, thunderstorm warnings for Calgary and southern Alberta

As of Thursday evening, Newell county near Brooks, Rosemary and Duchess is under a tornado warning

Meteorologists are a tracking a severe thunderstorm just north of Bassano. doppler Radar indicates the thunderstorm has significant rotation. The thunderstorm is moving east at 25 km/h and could also produce very large hail heavy downpours and strong wind gusts.

This is a dangerous and life-threatening situation.

Take cover, if threatening weather approaches, in a sturdy permanent building or underground.

If you see a funnel cloud, swirling debris near the ground, flying debris, or any threatening weather approaching, take shelter immediately.

Vehicles, mobile homes, cottages, boats and any tents or trailers are unsafe. Seek shelter in a location like a bathroom, interior closet, stairwell, basement or the lowest level in the building. Stay away from windows or outside walls, as they offer little protection.

As of Thursday at 6:30 p.m., Environment Canada has issued thunderstorm warnings for the following regions:

  • City of Calgary
  • Airdrie, Cochrane, Olds, Sundre
  • Brooks, Strathmore, Vulcan
  • Drumheller, Three Hills
  • Lethbridge, Taber, Milk River
  • Medicine Hat, Bow Island, Suffield
  • Okotoks, High River and Claresholm
  • Red Deer, Ponoka, Innisfail, Stettler

The thunderstorms carry the potential for large hail, strong wind gusts and flash floods.
