Lib Dems say sorry for dropping key 2010 manifesto pledge

LONDON (Reuters) - The Lib Dems apologised on Wednesday for promising to scrap university fees before the 2010 election - a pledge they broke once in power by agreeing to a hike in tuition costs.

The centre-left Lib Dems' popularity plummeted after the 2010 election and a series of reversals on key areas of party policy - such as education and austerity - following their decision to join forces with the centre-right Conservatives.

Political analysts say an apology for the U-turn on university fees is necessary for the party to begin to win back the trust of both core supporters and floating voters before the next election in 2015.

The coalition's move to raise the maximum annual limit on tuition fees nearly three-fold to 9,000 pounds in England and Wales triggered angry protests in 2010.

"I shouldn't have committed to a policy that was so expensive when there was no money around. Not least when the most likely way we'd end up in government was in coalition with Labour or the Conservatives, who were both committed to put fees up," Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg said.

"There's no easy way to say this: we made a pledge, we didn't stick to it - and for that I am sorry."

The Lib Dems, preparing for their annual conference next week, are seeking to rebuild support ahead of the 2015 election, Opinion polls put them on about 10 percent, far below the 23 percent they scored in 2010.

"I suspect people have already made up their minds on this, but it's an attempt to draw a line in the sand," said Manchester University politics professor Andrew Russell. "But it does look like the last card in a particularly weak hand."

"It is an attempt to defuse some of his opponents' most potent weapons. The Lib Dems desperately want to talk about other matters."

Clegg decided to make the unusual apology after a series of question-and-answer sessions with voters where the issue was consistently raised.

3rd platinum mine closes as South Africa vows to halt mining violence, strikers reject offer

JOHANNESBURG - South African police fired stun grenades to disperse striking miners Friday, acting hours after President Jacob Zuma's government vowed to halt illegal protests and disarm strikers it fears are threatening the country's biggest industry.

It was the first time police have acted against protesting miners since they killed 34 strikers Aug. 16 at Lonmin platinum mine, outraging a nation still scarred from state violence in apartheid days. Friday's clash came as miners in the fifth week of a bitter strike at the Lonmin mine rejected a company wage offer way below their demand.

"The government will no longer tolerate illegal gatherings and brandishing of weapons in this way," Justice Minister Jeff Radebe told a news conference.

Within hours, police spokesman Brig. Thulani Ngubane said officers fired tear gas to disperse some 1,500 strikers outside an Xstrata Platinum mine. Previously they had allowed miners waving machetes, knives, spears and clubs to hold marches outside mines, demonstrations aimed at pressuring those inside to stop work.

Despite the police action, Xstrata said it has temporarily suspended operations at Kroondal mine "to ensure the safety and security of employees and assets" amid "rising tensions and protests." The mine employs 5,300 workers who apparently were being threatened by outside strikers from Lonmin, Ngubane said.

Strikers are calling for walkouts at mines across South Africa, raising fears for the future of the crucial industry.

Labor unrest that began Aug. 10 at Lonmin also has stopped work at four mines of Anglo American Platinum, the world's largest platinum producer, and KDC western section of Gold Fields, the fourth-largest bullion producer.

Lonmin said only 0.3 percent of its 28,000 workers reported for duty Friday, a new low. Anglo American claimed only a few hundred of its 19,000 workers at Rustenburg mines were striking. Gold Fields said about 85 percent of 12,500 workers stayed away.

It has not been clear how many workers are striking and how many are too afraid to go to work because of intimidation by the strikers.

Radebe said the government is intervening because the mining industry is central to the economy of Africa's richest nation. "The South African government has noted and is deeply concerned by the amount of violence, threats and intimidation that is currently taking place in our country," he said.

Radebe refused to say whether police will be allowed to use live ammunition, as they did on Aug. 16. Striking miners have been armed with machetes and spears, with many carrying only traditional walking sticks.

"The police are well acquainted with how to enforce public order," Radebe said.

On Friday morning, the strikers turned down Lonmin's offer of a 900 rand ($112.50) increase that would give entry-level workers a basic monthly salary of 5,500 rand ($688), their leaders said. Lonmin is the No. 3 platinum producer in the world.

Strikers complained that Thursday night's offer, the first presented by London-registered Lonmin PLC since workers shut down the world's third-largest platinum mine on Aug. 10, falls far below their demands for a minimum salary of 12,500 rand ($1,560).

"Lonmin can just shut down its mine if it doesn't want to give us what we want!" one defiant striker shouted.

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan said the strikes are "extremely damaging" to the economy.

"It undermines confidence in the South African economy and, if we undermine confidence, we undermine investment," he told the news conference addressed by Radebe. "It's going to be extremely damaging to our economy in more ways than we understand at the moment."

Strikes are illegal unless approved by the government labor conciliation board, which only allows them once workers prove they have tried and failed to negotiate with an employer and after the conciliation board itself also tries to resolve the issue.

The illegal strikes are rooted in rivalry between the National Union of Mineworkers, an ally of the governing African National Congress, and a breakaway union. Many miners accuse the dominant union of cozying up to management and being more interested in its business interests and politics than the shop-floor needs of its members.

NUM secretary general Frans Baleni told a news conference Friday that his union is "extremely worried about an explosion of violence." He supported the government clampdown, saying, "We cannot have a situation where lawlessness is the norm."

He added, "The working class struggle is being compromised by this killing."

But the unrest has come to symbolize the gulf between a small black and white elite who reap profits from South Africa's mines while most miners live in tin shacks without water or electricity. Baleni, for instance, recently gave himself a 40 percent raise, upping his annual salary to R1.2 million ($150,000).

"We don't have running water in our homes, but they use gallons of fresh water in their swimming pools," one strike leader shouted, to cheers from protesters Friday.

Zuma, meanwhile, has angered many with a statement that dominant unions and political parties have more rights than minorities. People called into talk radio stations Friday to ask if their president understands that minority rights are enshrined in the constitution.

Answering legislators' questions in Parliament on Thursday, Zuma defended the initial decision to exclude from negotiations the breakaway Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union, whose supporters started the strike along with workers who do not want to be represented by any union.

"You have more rights because you're a majority; you have less rights because you're a minority. That's how democracy works," Zuma said, provoking a huge outcry from opposition legislators and callers questioning the president's understanding of democracy.

Khloe Kardashian on Fertility Problem: It's Tough...

Khloe Kardashian might be the daughter of O.J. Simpson.

But she is definitely having problems conceiving a child with husband Lamar Odom, a topic the reality star opened up about during an appearance today on Good Morning America.

"It's hard for me to show what I was going through," the youngest Kardashian sister said of depicting these struggles on television. "I feel like I helped a lot of people, but I'm still figuring it out for myself."

Kardashians on GMA

Khloe added that she wasn't familiar at all with this problem, either, especially considering the examples all around her.

"I never knew the difficulty of trying to get pregnant," she said. "My mom had so many kids and Kourtney popping them out like a PEZ dispenser, so you think it's like so easy. You realize it's not as easy as you might think."

We often make fun of the Kardashians because... come on. How can you not?!? But this is a legitimate issue that affects millions of women. THG sincerely wishes Khloe and Lamar the best.

On Sunday's Keeping Up with the Kardashians, meanwhile, Kim was seen freezing her eggs. She now says she doesn't think she's "ready to go there," though, "but it's good to have the information."

Email Marketing ? Effective Modern Marketing Tools For Businesses ...

email marketing

email marketing (Photo credit: opportplanet)

Email Marketing is one of the most effective modern marketing tools for businesses. Generally, all emails sent to prospective customers or current clients can be termed as ?email marketing?. However, email marketing in the context of business is meant to promote brand awareness, build customer loyalty and generate trust in the company or business. This is done through distributing ads, requesting forms of interaction as well as to solicit sales or donations.

To undertake email marketing, the first and most important aspect is the email list (distribution list) or database. Lists can be gathered or culled from various databases or Internet sources and current company customers or visitors? lists. There are also service companies that rent out email addresses for email marketing campaigns and other purposes.

Email marketing can be categorized into different types of emails:

  • Transactional emails are usually sent based on a customer?s relationship with the company. This category includes inquiries about products, purchase orders, order confirmation and email acknowledgments. This type of email can be effective in cross-selling or up-selling products and services.
  • Direct emails are generally sent to promote the company or product, to announce special offers, to invite people to store promotions or events and send brochures or catalogues.
  • Email newsletters are sent out to an email list of customers and/or regular subscribers. ?The newsletter can contain news about the company and company events as well as special offers, new products launching and store promotions.
  • Joint-advertising is when you attach advertisements to other people?s or companies? emails. This is commonly referred to as joint-advertising and both companies usually reciprocate the favour.

Email marketing can be an effective tool in the enhancement of merchant-customer relationships, encouragement of customer loyalty (repeat business) and in attracting new customers. Email messages can also be sent to cold lists, counting on the law of averages, which means that out of hundreds or thousands of emails sent, there should be a number of new customers that will be acquired.

There are software vendors that offer email support for newsletters and transactional e-mails, where promotional messages are embedded into the body of the email. Some software vendors also offer email marketing services and customer referral programs, including sending of personalized email messages for specific and targeted markets.

Email marketing services have, in recent times, replaced direct mailers, more commonly referred to as direct mail. Print marketing campaigns take a lot of time and money to create and most of them end up untouched in mailboxes or thrown in trashcans. Email campaigns, combined with marketing using social media, can be much more effective business strategies. With email marketing software, senders can see how many are opening the emails they sent, and the links viewers are clicking on, as well as the number of subscribers that forward the emails to friends and associates.

An email marketing service provider can also include social networking buttons like ?Tweet?, ?Like? and others to make sharing and forwarding messages easier. Another advantage is the ability to get instant results by viewing reports for the number of emails that bounced and the number of people that unsubscribed from the service, open rates and even click-thrus. This is efficient way of determining if a marketing campaign is effective. Surveys can also be devised through an email marketing service, providing the means to gather quick feedback from customers.

Since the Internet makes communication fast, easy, more effective and convenient, more businesses, whether small or large, have been taking advantage of connecting with customers and prospective clients through this medium. There are email marketing products like iContact, Constant Contact, Benchmark Email and HostPapa Connect, which make an email campaign simple, customized and easy to use. Contact lists can easily be uploaded into the database so that emails can be sent in bulk.

The products are usually flexible, so that users can customize the design of their marketing messages, including the logo and images to reflect the company?s personality. Where before, physical errors in a copy can result in costly reprinting, email marketing services provide the means to edit text and adjust images in the email before it is sent or even after some of them have already gone out without incurring extra costs.

An email service makes creating an email marketing campaign easy, even for a novice user without programming skills. Integrated wizards and help sections guide users to create the type of email that they need; announcement, newsletters or surveys. These email marketing tools also come with inbuilt online tests to determine the probability of the message getting caught in the spam folder by scoring the email on content.

Email marketing software allows for generating reports, statistics and graphs to learn if a particular campaign is working or not. Knowing how the email campaign is performing will help in making corrections and revising content for a more effective marketing campaign. Most email marketing tools are also integrated with Google Analytics that gives access to data beyond just email.

Because email marketing is delivered in real time, a direct mailing campaign is now an almost archaic method to use in marketing. The whole world is going online with purchasers and sellers following the crowd. Business and the way it is conducted have been reinvented by the Internet and email marketing.

Amber Portwood Speaks From Jail: I Am Not Normal!

Troubled Teen Mom cast member Amber Portwood stated the obvious in a statement from jail in which she said she is not normal - and needs to grow up.

Two weeks after the Teen Mom finale, she issued remarks from prison to coincide with the eunion special that aired Tuesday night on MTV with Dr. Drew.

In it, she talked about how she "got lost" in drugs and alcohol.

Amber Portwood, now serving a five-year sentence, writes:

Amber Portwood in Jail

"Right now I'm trying to figure out what I'm doing with my life. I guess I just got lost. I went to jail because I had an addiction to opiates."

"You live and you learn and that's what's real. "It was time for me to stop partying and realize that even though I'm 21, I'm not a normal 21-year-old."

"I'm a mother. I have to grow up quicker and start acting like a mother."

No arguments here, even though Portwood's voluntarily decision to serve out a five-year term in jail rather than comply with a court-ordered drug program is dubious.

After violating her probation stemming from a December 2011 arrest for drug possession, Amber's behind bars for a LONG time, but says it's for the best.

"My No. 1 priority right now in life is dedicating my life to being sober, to being a sober person," she writes, adding that she's doing it for Leah, 3.

"[I want] to show my daughter that people make mistakes but you can always come back. If Leah learns anything from me she should see how becoming a teen mom can change you. How everything is postponed," Portwood said.

She also hopes people learn from her mistakes.

"We made the show for a reason...some decisions change your whole life. If you don't want to take responsibility and use protection, don't have sex."

"One night can change your whole life into a sad story," noted Portwood, adding that the "mean person" viewers see on Teen Mom is far from reality.

"I want to show everybody I can do it and can start living a straight life and getting my family back in order," she concluded, and we wish her the best.
