Glenn Brumage On S3 And The Expanding Chinese Market ...

Glenn Brumage

Glenn Brumage

Glenn Brumage grew up not knowing much about China other than that it was communist, a bit scary, and that we would never want to get into a land war with them. But after taking his first trip to Beijing three and a half years ago for a surf summit, Brumage learned something else about the country - that ?it was really, really cool.?

Brumage, who built an impressive r?sum? over the years with organization such as Innes, Tum Yeto, and IASC, instantly saw a huge array of possibilities to help create an action sports culture in the fastest growing country in the world. ?China?s booming economy has drawn comparisons between its current population and the US?s in the 1950s, with limitless opportunities as an emerging consumer class figures out what to do with their newly found wealth.

?Right now you can count the number of Chinese surfers on one hand and we probably have a hundred skateboarders in all of the big cities, which really isn?t saying a lot,? says Brumage. ? But, there are 1.6 billion people, there?s 240 million people in their middle class. That?s a new thing. Within three years it?ll be up to the entire US population. Their middle class is already starting to overshadow our entire population and it?ll be more than 500 million, half a billion, in five years.?

That realization triggered an ?aha? moment for Brumage who joined Wabsono International, a Chinese company that is working to license US action sports brands in the market, as its director of business development, and began a crash course in the Chinese market, ranging from retail psychology to political science, to better navigate the country?s channels.

Since that point, Brumage has helped launch numerous local surf and skate competitions and conferences to develop China?s domestic market and educate US brands, as well as local retailers, about the possibilities of the country?s action sports market.

One thing that became glaringly necessary through this process was creating an independent trade agency to serve as a liaison for brands and retailers, which will eventually include a trade show component, specifically focused on the massive Chinese market. From this, S3 (Surf, Skate, Snow) was born, following the success of the Surfing China organization in establishing events and competitions, as well as the China Action Sports Exhibition, CASE.

We caught up with Brumage to learn more about the new organization and the current state of the domestic Chinese market:

Why did you guys decide to launch S3?

Wabsono?s end game is licensing a certain number of key brands and helping develop the market as any brand would do. It took us about two years of market research and really getting to know the retailers and situation over there, and we discovered that we need SIMA, IASC, and SIA and we need them [together] and we need them immediately.

S3's Andrew Manly

S3's Andrew Manly

We got together with Andrew Manly, who has run a number of larger trade organizations, not in our industry, but in China, and understands the government situation, the structure of business and how it works and we said, look, we?ll help you get this started, it needs to live on its own. It?s independent.

S3 is there to help a brand from the States get into the market on its own or with a partner, pick the right partner, get through the government red tape to open a business there.

So it?s really like a consulting service supported by brands looking to come over?

It will be supported in the long run because it will run a trade show. Even though Surf Expo is already taking a step in that direction, they?re doing it in Singapore, which is great for Australasia, but does nothing for Mainland China. They?re not going to go to Singapore - they say, ?if you?re going to sell me something, you better come to my country.?

Have you guys set a date for that yet?

We have a thing called the China Action Sports Expo, CASE, that we?ve done twice. They were tiny, almost to the point of failure that we funded at Wabsono. It was a very, very beginning stage. We?ll build on that, but we?ve turned it over. It needs to be entirely neutral. You can?t be involved with another brand. I wouldn?t go to a Billabong show with Quiksilver product. The other thing is in China, trade organizations are in a lot of cases government sponsored. They?re trying to develop trade and that?s another way that S3 will be funded. It?s entirely different than SIMA or SIA. There will be dues, but for the most part that?s not how will it live.

When are you planning the next CASE?

I?ve convinced them to move it from September, it?s the wrong time of year for China, to December or January and we?re trying to move it to Beijing, but we?re still very much in the early stages. Worst-case scenario, CASE will actually take a one year hiatus while S3 gets organized and more brands as members.

From the development side, what have you found really speaks to potential Chinese customers and action sports enthusiasts as far as messaging and marketing?

The thing that seems the most positive is the correlation between their youth and our youth in the 1950s. There are so many easy correlations. You extrapolate that and unless something crazy happens like the government says ?skateboarding is dangerous-you can?t do that, ?which they can do. It scares me about surfing and skating - all you have to have is somebody drown on a big day or break their neck skateboarding and we?re hosed. They?ll make it illegal, and if they say it?s illegal, it?s truly illegal.

So does the safety message get played up more there?

Right now there?s no message on safety. We?re trying to avoid it because even with protective gear you still get hurt. CASE is managing the government liaisons for safety. That?s a much more critical piece in China than here.? If they decide you have to wear a helmet, there?s no being Linglei and not doing it.

Going back to the possibilities, kids are kids everywhere. Even if they?re focusing on college, they?re likely to think outside the norm and do what their parents didn?t. They?re seeing a future and economy that?s entirely different from what their parents saw.screen-shot-2011-08-30-at-12406-pm

You must have seen something really promising as far as this market to throw your hat in. What made you determine that China was the next horizon and that it was worth moving your focus away from the States?

The first thing is just the amount of potential that?s there. It?s so fricking massive - everything from their ski areas becoming more sophisticated and exploring and finding more places to board, to an immense amount of uncharted surf spots along a coast that no one goes to.

The other part of it, is the guys that I work with and their interest in trying to do it right and be legit. There are a shitload of expat Americans and Australians over there just trying to make a quick buck. They don?t care how they present what we do, our sports. I grew up surfing in San Clemente, I was a ski and snowboard rep for too damn long, I?m really married to this culture and it aggravates me when guys do things that I perceive as being counterproductive in a super new market.

It sounds like you have some pretty cool contests in the works as well?

I?m pretty stoked about the skate series we?re doing. Our guys did it for all the right reasons and all the right ways. X Games is already here. They?ve actually held a Dew Tour, and for the most part, all those things have left the Chinese skater out of the loop. There aren?t a whole lot of vert skaters, they?ve only got a few hot snowboarders, so these have just been media plays and not about the locals. It?s great to show how cool vert is, but when we looked at it, we realized it needs to be the Chinese Maloof Money Cup. It needs to be for Chinese skaters and them alone.

A big part of our industry is getting people stoked on it. I know that there are going to be a ton of skateboarders, that?s going to change the complexion of our business in China and the culture, media and everything else.

Circuit Training for Effective and Continuous Weight Loss | Women's ...

After more than a decade in the health and fitness industry, one of the most common goals that I come across with clients is weight loss. Easy to understand coming from a country where 30% of our nation?s population is considered obese. So how do we solve this problem? Well, it?s difficult to tell where to start, just pick up any magazine at your local grocery store only to find 5-10 different fad diets and several ?ways to lose weight fast? quick fix type solutions. With so much mixed media it?s not hard to see why there?s so much confusion! It?s overwhelming, confusing, and very frustrating for the average individual to sift through countless pages of advice only to come back and report to me ?I?ve been doing cardio for months and I just don?t seem to be getting anywhere?. My goal here is to clear up some of that confusion and present a weight loss solution for the average individual looking to just keep fit and toned, not to become a bodybuilder, and not to run the next marathon, and it?s called circuit training.

Many have heard the term before, few understand it. What most people fail to see when embarking on a weight loss journey is that the absolute WORST thing you can do is do the same workout day after day. Jumping on a treadmill for 30 minutes keeping the same pace for the entire half hour will not yield maximum results, plain and simple. The human body is very intelligent and you won?t fool it into burning stored fat just by jumping on a treadmill for 30 minutes. Not to mention this routine can get very boring very quickly! Circuit training is an effective fat burning technique used by trainers all over the world based on the basic principle of ?muscle confusion?. Keeping your 30 minute workout diverse in movements and heart rates will thrust your body into what we call ?fat burning mode?, enabling the individual to get the most possible out of those 30 minutes. Incorporating 2-3 different workout routines with little to no rest in between is extremely effective at raising one?s heart rate and these exercises can be done simply with your own body weight. Furthermore, circuit training never allows your body time to adapt. The body, being the complex machine that it is, always tries to find ways to adapt and take the paths of least resistance. Because circuit training is constantly changing, your body never gets a chance to adapt and revert to homeostasis, rather stays in that ?fat burning zone?.

So instead of jumping on the treadmill at your local gym or sitting on a recumbent bike for 30 minutes, give circuit training a try! It?s guaranteed to take you out of that plateau and into results you never might have anticipated! Not only will you be burning fat, raising metabolism, and conditioning your cardiovascular system, but you?ll also be achieving healthy muscle tone and definition. Stop being the average Joe or Jane and try something new to take your health and fitness routine to a new level!

Gaddafi son Saif al-Islam vows continued resistance (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? Muammar Gaddafi's son, Saif al-Islam, on Wednesday vowed continued resistance to Libyan forces which ousted his father from Tripoli and urged Libyans to wage a war of attrition against the National Transitional Council and its NATO backers.

His statement appeared to contradict comments from another of Gaddafi's sons Saadi who said he had contacted Libya's National Transitional Council (NTC) to try and stop the bloodshed.

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, in a statement broadcast on the Syrian-owned Arrai satellite TV channel, said his father was doing well and warned NTC forces against trying to enter the family's hometown of Sirte, still under Gaddafi's control, saying 20,000 armed youths were waiting for them.

"We assure people we are here, ready and in good shape. Resistance is continuing and victory is near," Saif al-Islam added, saying he was speaking from the suburbs of Tripoli.

"We assure people that we are standing fast and the commander is in good condition," he said referring to his father, who had made two audio statements to radio and television channels since Tripoli fell earlier this month.

Saif al-Islam also urged Libyans across the country to move against the NTC forces. "We must wage a campaign of attrition day and night until these lands are cleansed from these gangs and traitors," he said.

Saif al-Islam also slammed NATO for dealing with an ex-member of al Qaeda, who he said had been appointed to a senior position in the capital Tripoli. "You will regret this a lot," he said.

He said his father's military complex at Bab al-Aziziya had endured more than 64 air raids by NATO over seven months and all soldiers withdrew during the bombardments.

"Our conditions are very well and the day of victory is close. They will leave, the mercenaries and NATO will leave," Saif al-Islam said.

Saadi told Al-Arabiya TV he had contacted the NTC commander in Tripoli with authorization from his father as part of efforts to stop the bloodshed in Libya.

"We were talking about negotiations based on ending bloodshed," Saadi Gaddafi said.

The chief of anti-Gaddafi forces in Tripoli Abdel Hakim Belhadj told Reuters that Saadi had contacted him and asked to join the NTC forces if his safety was assured.

"I spoke to him personally," Abdul Hakim Belhadj said. "He called and revealed his intention to come on the side of the rebels (...) We told Saadi we would guarantee him decent treatment in line with the human rights, legal rights of any Libyan person."

U.S. news network CNN earlier reported that Saadi denied he planned to surrender.

2 Tibet monks sentenced over colleague's death (AP)

BEIJING ? A Chinese court has sentenced two more Tibetan Buddhist monks to up to 13 years in prison for assisting in the death of a 16-year-old colleague who lit himself on fire, penalties aimed apparently at discouraging further such acts.

Tsering Tenzin was sentenced to 13 years and Tenchum to 10 years, the official Xinhua News Agency reported late Tuesday. Tenchum goes by just one name.

The two "plotted, instigated and assisted in the self-immolation of fellow monk Rigzin Phuntsog and caused his death," Xinhua said, citing the court's findings.

Their sentencing Tuesday at the Maerkang County People's Court in Sichuan province's Aba prefecture follows an 11-year sentence handed down to another monk, Drongdru, accused of hiding Phuntsog after he lit himself on fire and depriving him of medical attention for 11 hours. Phuntsog later died in a hospital.

The March 16 death of Phuntsog, reportedly a nephew and a disciple of Drongdru, was seen as a protest against China's heavy-handed controls on Tibetan Buddhism and provoked a standoff between security forces and monks.

Similar protests have been mounted in the past, although the exact circumstances surrounding Phuntsog's death remain murky.

Aba prefecture has been the scene of numerous protests over the past several years against the Chinese government. Most are led by monks who are fiercely loyal to Tibet's exiled Buddhist leader, the Dalai Lama, who fled the Himalayan region in 1959 amid an abortive uprising against Chinese rule and is reviled by Beijing.

As custodians of Tibet's Buddhist culture, monks are especially sensitive to strict Chinese controls over monasteries that they say take precious time away from religious study and practice.

Kirti monastery, where all four monks were resident, is under tight guard by security forces who have been accused by overseas pro-Tibetan groups of beating onlookers and detaining monks. The area is off-limits to foreign journalists.

In June, China rejected pressure from a U.N. human rights panel to provide information about more than 300 monks from Kirti whose whereabouts it said have been unknown since the monastery was raided in April.

The Foreign Ministry has said that monks were undergoing "legal education" ? a reference to compulsory political lectures on the basics of the Chinese Constitution, criminal law and regulations on religious affairs.

The U.S. State Department issued a statement Monday saying it was concerned about Drongdru's sentencing, adding that it was unclear whether he had been granted proper legal rights.

"We urge the Chinese government to ensure transparency and to uphold the procedural protections and rights to which Chinese citizens are entitled under China's Constitution and laws and under international standards," the statement said.

10 Tips To Help You Choose a Wood Stain-DIY Home Improvement

3 Coats of Water Based Floor Resin Stain ( Less Toxic Stuff )

wood staining techniques, how to remove wood stain], ebony wood stain], wood stain, minwax stain, bioshield floor resin stain, staining stairs, DIY, Do It Yourself, Home Improvement, 10 Tips

Before Prep and Sanding

When I started my maverick DIY project of the year, The Complete Staircase Makeover, or as it is now known, ?Project Stairway?, I had little to no knowledge of wood stains. The next two months would take me on a Do It Yourself whirlwind journey into learning a TON about not only remodeling a staircase, but also selecting the right products to do so. That being said, compared to a master craftsman, I think I have only scratched the surface (pun intended)

As I read up on stains and tweeted back and forth with major manufactures like MinWax and Olympic Stain, I was surprised at their quick responses to my questions and the amount of educational resources at my disposal via the web. Always cross check your information with a reputable source. In my findings, there is about as much bad information as good information floating around.

?

So I suppose Tip 1 is :

Do your homework from visiting your local retailer to contacting the manufactures directly. There are a gazzilion DIY Home Improvement Youtube videos, DIY blogs and DIY websites from both professional product companies and the weekend craft warrior Average Joe or Jane, many reviews and tutorials are product, technique and tool specific.

Tip 2:

Consider Your Workspace. The two most popular types of stain on the market are water based and oil based / Indoor and Outdoor stains. They have their pros and cons. For my specific application, I couldn?t remove the stairs so they had to remain in the house. This ruled out using any oil based stain and most water based stains because of the off gassing and odor. Depending on your stain the odor is anywhere from annoying to harmful, so you will want to use it in a well ventilated area and possibly use a respirator that?s rated for stain and solvents, I use the 3M respirators available at Home Depot ? They do work pretty well, just make sure you pick up the right one for the job. I opted for an aqua floor resin floor coating stain? from Bioshield it is far less toxic in terms of VOC?s. The stain looks beautiful, was easy to apply, clean up and I applied it before I went to bed at night and left all the windows open. The odor was hardly noticeable but the results definitely were.

Tip 3:

Type of Wood: Sanding the wood with nothing greater than 100 grit sandpaper on a Ryobi Pad Sander left my wood porous enough to really soak up the water based aqua resin stain evenly. My wood was pine, so it was pretty forgiving. Different types of wood will require different types of sanding, especially between coats, where I personally used 320 very lightly. Here is a great article from the DIY Network regarding Sanding and Preparing Wood Before Staining

Tip 4:

Consider The Surface Of The Wood: Some woods will require a conditioner solution, Since my stairs had been indoors and covered by carpet for 35+ years, they only required heavy sanding to get off old paint and carpet gunk. An easy way to test to see if your wood is ready to stain is to put a drop of water on it, if it beads, chances are it will not stain evenly. Well conditioned wood should absorb a drop of water, research the characteristics of your wood.

Tip 5:

The Quality of your Application tool: It could be easy to blame a crappy staining job on crappy stain, but that?s not the only point of failure. When I started my first coat I used a less expensive bristled stain brush. Thankfully I had a forgiving Stain that flowed well, because the brush made things pretty streaky. I then purchased a higher quality Purdy brand brush at about $14 bucks from Home Depot. While it sounds expensive, it?s not, the results are very noticeable and it lasted the duration of the job.

Tip 6:

How Many Coats of Stain: I experimented with two different colors of floor resin stain on the Pine. One was an Ebony and the other a Walnut. With the Ebony one coat was almost totally black when I tested on a piece of the Pine. The Walnut color was far more forgiving and allowed me the ability to darken just a tad with each new coat. Depending on your stain and type of wood, it will vary greatly. I suggest testing on an area that is UN-noticeable. In my case, I had to test and then sand it off since everything is noticeable on floating stairs, at least in my OCD eyes.

Tip 7:

Try Before You Buy: I may have been lucky but I was able to get a few free samples of my preferred choices of stain prior to ordering a larger quantity. This is the beauty of buying from a Mom and Pops shop, they respect and earn your business, They love DIY and the craftsman / woman. I don?t think I?ve seen free samples at the large stores. I was able to test the product and confirm that I liked it. It can be as easy as just picking up the phone and talking to the right person to get samples and product knowledge.

Tip 8:

Follow The Directions: If you are like me, I am too A.D.D. to read directions, but stain is just that, it?s permanent. The application method of a stain may vary greatly from product to product, in this very rare instance, I am glad I read the directions. I got the best bang for my buck and taking a few minutes to educate myself saved me from making potentially permanent mistakes.

Tip 9:

Leave Yourself Enough Time: To do the job right. Stain is tricky, done right it can be beautiful, last a long time and add value to any project. Leave yourself ample time to do the detail work that stain requires. Taping off edges, getting the right brushes, having the right weather conditions and testing samples.

Tip 10:

A Clean Work Space: Stain likes dust and dust likes Stain, it?s an abusive relationship. The Bioshield Aqua Floor Resin Stain I worked with recently is pretty sticky upon application, it dries in about 4 hours, but keeping a well ventilated area free of dust, especially living on a golf course is tricky to say the least. I found applying it at night with ample lighting to be the most effective, the wind was calmer, the dog was asleep ( actually she?s always asleep) and dust was minimal.
