Dauphin Kings head coach and general manager Marlin Murray has been suspended 12 games for his third-period outburst on Thursday night during an MJHL playoff game at St. James Civic Centre.
Commissioner Kim Davis gave Murray two games for the gross misconduct he received and another 10 for physical harassment of the officials that resulted in a match penalty.
The Kings were also fined an unspecified amount.
?I don?t agree with it,? said Murray, who is appealing his suspension. ?I thought it would be in the range of five to seven games. I don?t agree with the way it was handled. I have not spoken to Kim Davis about the actual suspension part. Everything?s been done through e-mail.?
Murray tossed sticks, water bottles and what appeared to be medical equipment at referees Ryan Galley and Brett Montsion in the third period of his team?s 5-1 loss to the Winnipeg Saints.
The outburst was caught on video, and it went international on Friday, appearing on TSN?s Sportscentre and even SI.com.
The Saints took a 3-1 series lead into Game 5 of the Sher-Wood Division semifinal on Saturday in Dauphin. Murray wasn?t behind the bench for a 6-3 loss that ended the Kings? season.
?I take full responsibility for my actions,? he said Saturday afternoon. ?Did I go overboard? Absolutely. Do I regret doing it? No, I don?t.?
Murray didn?t pull any punches when asked why he didn?t regret his actions.
?The frustration level as far as the officiating has been concerned for the first four games of our series was at a boiling point with our players, and we had to make a stance,? Murray said.
Winnipeg had 16 power-play chances in Thursday?s game to Dauphin?s eight. Murray was also upset because he said his goaltender was being contacted repeatedly by the Saints.
Davis was at Thursday?s game and saw no problem with the referees.
?I had no issues with the officiating whatsoever from a league perspective,? Davis said. ?That was the second game I had seen in the series, and in both games officiating was not an issue or a concern to me in terms of it being of a lesser quality than what we would expect.?
Those who have watched the incident are either behind Murray or feel he should never coach again, but he believes he did what was best for his team.
?The people who truly know me know that I?m a passionate, fiery type of guy, and I will go to bat for my players through thick or thin whether they?re right or wrong. I?ve got their backs,? he said. ?Yeah, I was making a statement. I was making a stance about how bad the officiating has been in the previous four games.?
Murray has had nothing but success in Dauphin for the last decade, even guiding the team to the 2010 RBC Cup final.
He feels one incident won?t tarnish that at all.
?Am I happy with the way it all turned out? No, I?m not,? he said.
?But I?ve had likely anywhere from 12 to 15 hate emails come my way, and I?ve had over 100 emails saying, ?Good for you.? And a lot of those emails have come from 65 to 70% of the parents of the kids that are on our team, saying ?Thanks for going to bat for our kids.??
